Common Questions

What Oklahoma homeowners ask before they book. Anything not covered here, ask the contractor when they call.

It depends mostly on the tree's height, its condition and what sits underneath it. A 30-foot pine in an open back yard and a 70-foot oak leaning over a roof are different jobs, and they are priced differently. The only number that counts is the one a contractor gives you after seeing the tree. For a sense of the range first, our tree service cost guide sets out what moves a quote up or down, and the tree removal cost guide goes deeper on removals.

Oklahoma has no statewide tree removal permit, so the answer comes down to your city and to where the tree stands. A tree well inside your own yard is a different case from one in the right-of-way between the sidewalk and the street, and some cities protect particular trees whoever owns the ground. Call your city before work starts. Our guide to tree removal permits covers the rules city by city.

Keep everyone away from it, and treat anything touching a power line as live — call your utility before anyone goes near it. Photograph the damage before it is moved, because your insurer will want to see it. Then request emergency tree service and we will put the job in front of a contractor covering your city. Our post-storm checklist and what to do if a tree is on your house take it from there.

Sometimes, and it usually turns on what the tree hit rather than on the tree itself. Policies commonly treat a tree that damaged a covered structure differently from one that simply fell in the yard, and deductibles and limits vary. Your policy and your adjuster decide it, not us. Our guide to insurance and tree removal explains the distinctions worth understanding before you file.

Usually it is worth asking, because the crew, the equipment and the access are already on site — which is why stump grinding is often quoted alongside a removal. Grinding takes the stump below grade and leaves ground you can plant or pave over; pulling the whole root plate out is a bigger job. Our guides cover grinding versus full removal and whether to grind during a removal.

Do not touch it, and do not let a crew work on it until your utility has been out. Which lines the utility maintains and which are yours varies between OG&E, PSO and the rural co-ops, so call yours first and describe what you are looking at. Our guide to trees near power lines sets out who handles what.
